Surplus Property
The Purchasing Division is responsible for managing the disposition of surplus property in accordance with Section 3.24.020 of the City of Soledad Municipal Code. When a department wishes to retire an asset, the Purchasing Officer will first determine whether the item can be transferred and repurposed internally by conducting outreach to other departments. If there is no internal interest or viable use within the organization, the item will then be listed for public sale through GovDeals, an online auction platform specializing in government surplus. This process ensures responsible asset management, transparency, and the opportunity to recover value from equipment or supplies that are no longer suitable for city use.

City Projects

Water Meter Repair/Replacements
Over the past three months, the City of Soledad Public Works Water Division has made significant upgrades to improve our water infrastructure by repairing and replacing approximately 100 water meters across the city. This includes replacing around 60 broken meters—a significant increase compared to our usual 10-12 meter replacements per month. As water meters age, they can slow down and may under record the amount of water used. To maintain accuracy, we replace meters based on their size and installation date. Most water meters have a life expectancy of about 15-20 years. These new meters come with cellular technology. This technology allows for automatic data collection and wireless transmission to a mobile handheld device used by our operators. The data is then seamlessly uploaded to our billing system, ensuring accurate and timely monthly billing for all residents.

FUTURE PROJECTS

Recycled Water Conveyance Project
This summer, construction is set to start on the Recycled Water Conveyance pipeline system designed to deliver reclaimed water for irrigating the City’s parks, some landscaping, and Soledad school turf areas, promoting sustainable water use. Approximately 54 million gallons per year of potable well water will be replaced with recycled water produced at the City’s Water Reclamation facility. This project will also enable the City and SUSD to irrigate sports fields during future drought periods. Although somewhat common in other parts of the state, Soledad will be the first agency in our region to irrigate parks and school fields with renewable, recycled water.
